Insomniacs and World Music Fans alike - We have something for you...

July 1, 2008

Music.gifIn a world growing ever smaller but still divided, it is music that provides a universal language. For the month of July the channel will take viewers on a musical journey around the world, celebrating diversity and connecting viewers with other cultures.

A perfect fit for night owls and those who prefer to record the programming block on DVR to watch at their leisure, NGC’s broadcast of Nat Geo Music will encompass music videos, concerts, interviews and documentaries, with a focus on stories that make music a vehicle for a better understanding and appreciation of today’s global community. An alternative to the mainstream, Nat Geo Music is progressive and experimental, highlighting ways in which local sounds are evolving to influence artists from different backgrounds and places.

• Place Jam – focusing on music from a specific country
• We Love… – dedicated to artists and genres we love (e.g., We Love Reggae, We Love Caetano Veloso)
• Music Nomad – programming connecting the spirit of traveling to music
• GEO Sessions– intimate acoustic performances and interviews with top musicians, including Ben Harper, K'naan, Michael Franti and Aterciopelados
• Fusion – music videos of all genres from around the globe

You can catch this special showcase everynight, all month long on the National Geographic Channel from 3am to 6am....its late yes, but thats why they created DVRs.

I think National Geographic stood for class until I saw more and more of the inane drivel, you've been broadcasting. Now you're using Nat Geo. How tacky. Also, I would like to say that the Nat Geo Music really really stinks. I used to enjoy the late night programing, being a confirmed night owl. Really dissappointed.

Ray Cee:

What's with the music? If I wanted music I'd watch VH1 or MTV. PLEASE, MAKE IT STOP!

T. Gibson:

I’ve enjoyed Nat. Geo for many years. My time to watch what I want is late at night, a time when I can enjoy your programming (what the kids call pop’s boring TV). The kids are in bed and I can enjoy good programming.
Recently, NatGeo has decided to become another music channel. Like we don’t have enough music channels on already.
Please go back to what you did so well. I miss my late night TV time.

Thank You
T. Gibson

greg:

I was listening half asleep last night 5:00 am july 4th and NGC music was on. I heard a great song it was a man and a woman (flemenco) I think. It was unbeleiveable. I cant find it on NGC's website. or in any channel info. I need to find that song. hey Nat Geo. please list the artist at the end of the video, and have a link on the site which shows who was on during the week.

Help us out. please tell me who the artist was!

Ken:

The first three comments make me really sad. I think that is what NG gets for adding a lot of lowest common denominator reality show programming (like all the other channels).

Yes, I suppose that people looking to watch animals ripping out the throats of other animals, are going to be disappointed with World Music - and vice versa, by the way.

The Nat Geo Music show is easily the best music program on TV at the moment.

I'm further saddened to hear that it might only last one month.

PS To Greg:

The artist and song title are shown at the end of every video (although they use the traditional MTV method of showing the information about 10 seconds before the end of the video, rather than right at the end).

There was a duet between a man and a woman (cuban, not flamenco) that ended at 5am Eastern Time. If you like that, I strongly suggest you go to your local video store and rent the excellent DVD "Buena Vista Social Club".

greg:

Thanks, I agree, with your assesment on NGC and the Music, I love it.

Any Idea who the artist were? or the name of the song? they were two guitarists, and there guitar playing was amazing.

Thanks, G

Ken:

Greg -

Oh, that's a different one!

There was a duet between a man and a woman that ended right at 5am, so when you said "song" "man and woman" and "5 am", I assumed you meant the cuban Buena Vista Social Club song.

When you say GUITARS, now I know who you mean, and why you said "flamenco".

That is:

Rodrigo Y Gabriela

playing "Diablo Roja".

They are two young Mexican heavy metal electric guitarists who decided to go acoustic and move to Ireland !

Search youtube.com for them and you will see many different live and studio videos, and they have a couple of CDs.

RUSS:

IF I WANT MUSIC, I'LL WATCH A MUSIC CHANNEL! PLEASE RETURN TO OLD FORMAT AND LET'S TRY TO GET MORE UP TO DATE PROGRAMS. I'M REALLY TIRED OF PAYING SATELLITE TV BILLS TO WATCH INCESSANT RE-RUNS.

Paul:

I turned on NatGeo the other day and saw a music video. My first thought was "wth, are they turning into VH1 now?". I "would" have rather watched something along the line of nature, or "Seconds from Disaster", or any other of NatGeo's "old format" programming. It reminded me of turning on SciFi and seeing wrestling.

But, I probably never would have heard the above mentioned "Rodrigo y Gabriela", or other music and videos from other countires. I am always searching for new and interesting music to listen to. Plus, I have always been partial to Spanish guitar music.

NatGeo has always brought entertaining and educational subjects to their audience, and now they've just added one more to broaden our horizons. Nice job NG.

Just don't overdo it, maybe keep the music thing down to an hour or so per week. Not every morning at 4am

Ken:

I appears from the comments above that the "night owls" and the "DVR users" are two entirely different groups.

I have used DVRs extensively since they were first invented. I have also never turned a TV on between 3am and 6am !

I really think that NG need to publicize this program in various World Music discussion forums, since it is not going to appeal to the normal NG viewers.

Nowadays, I think that National Geographic Magazine readers and National Geographic Society members, both of whom would love this show, are not the same as National Geographic Channel viewers.

PS I am reminded of the scene in Goodfellas, where we see that the favorite TV show of the crude and cruel mafia boss is "When Animals Attack"...

Vikki:

I am also searching for the name of the artist(s) featured on NatGeo Music on July 4th.

sam:

so a song came on last night i'd say around 1am. it was in spanish and there was one man sitting in front of a mic singing....they showed lots of children that were land mine victims i believe. then a second guy started harmonizing an was sitting next to the first guy...both singing holding the words in their hands.

anyone know what the artist's name is?? i know the song title started with "dove"

thanks!

Ken:

IIRC, the land-mine video was by Juanes.

To watch music video channels live, you have to remember to look for the artist and song title 10 seconds before the end of the video.

Ken:

My only comment about the music so far is that I'd like to see more emphasis on a balanced portryal of music around the world, and less emphasis on commercial "World Music" artists that you might see in the World Music section at Amazon.

For example, I've now watched about 7 hours of the show and have yet to see one artist from East Asia - i.e. China, Japan, Korea, or Thailand.

Instead, I've seen two Ben Harper videos who has no relevance to the program, and probably is included because either he has a clever agent, or else the programmer wants to assuage their sense of social responsibility...

Ray Cee:

Seems pro and con is fairly split.

One thing Nat Geo may not have considered is some viewers do live west of the Mississippi. The music is not on at 3-6:00am, but 12-3:00am.

As T. Gibson (who must also be in the west) pointed out, it's the time when the adults finally get to pick what's on the tube.

GREGGORY LEE FRENCH:

THE FOLLOWING KEEPS ME AWAKE... Is it in National Geographic’s mission statement that only those that can afford to pay for a higher cable package get to learn? Comcast of Chico CA., slammed your channel into a more expensive cable package on July 1 2008. I would guess Comcast did this to increase there bottom line, hoping that your audience would pony up another $30 a month see quality TV. I can't afford the up-grade and neither can many other families with low incomes. Maybe your mission statement should read. "With the help of Comcast, we bring knowledge into affluent homes, let the poor eat cake and watch smut".
If you have a Qam tuner in your TV set and have basic starter digital cable you can tune to the 80-1 plus channels and get free smut movies on Comcast Cable Chico. How nice the poor kids can watch smut after school but not the National Geographic show there teacher wanted them to watch. If you have any influence on Comcast Cable, impart to them my concern. Stop them from widening the gap between the rich and the poor, because soon the poor will refuse to eat the cake and start chopping off heads. I think you learn about the French revolution watching quality TV like National Geographic.

Sincerely, Gregg French
Gregg1@stormnet.com

P.S. You should rerun and watch the BBC program Connections. It might help you make one. GOOD NIGHT.

GREGGORY LEE FRENCH:

A CONNECTION FOR YOU...
Because of all the smut the poor watched, they may butt f#@h your corpse after they behead you.

Elizabeth:

I'm not a regular Nat Geo Channel watcher (in fact, I tend to avoid tv) but couldn't sleep recently and found the world music playing...

Nice. (It's too bad that apparently other people have been so annoyed by it; I was pleasantly surprised.)

Question -- where can we find lists of artists/songs from each program?

I ask because I saw an amazing video filmed in MOROCCO I think featuring a little boy running through a market, getting onto a bike, and leaving a note and an orange on the doorstep of the woman singing... and I'd really like to know, who's she and what's that song??

Thanks. E

MY QUESTION: Is this the same duo that smashed the guitars on the floor until it they were knee deep in them? If so I WANT THAT VIDEO!!! That was the most fantastic, mezmerizing, mind-boggling guitar playing I have EVER, EVER seen. Just blew me away! I've been searching NGMusic for days trying to find it. I've got to have that video, I'm just crazy for it. It is like no other guitar performance I have ever seen, just absolutely flawless, yet it seems impossible to play like they did! Please tell me this is the same source...

Thanks,

Susan (a frustrated guitar player wanna-be)
