Ok, ok wait. Apparently this is coming off talking about the SLC Straight Edge loons that killed somebody and would try to bomb McDonalds' and animal labs, but the narrator is talking about how vegan Straight Edge is the peaceful version of Straight Edge and its presence refutes the violent image? All those militant Utah kids were VEGAN STRAIGHT EDGE WJHWLEHWLEQL.

Was hoping I would have been asked to be a part of this documentary..

Ian, if you're the real deal, I am also confused as to why they'd have excluded you.
It's possible they were aware of certain comments distancing yourself from straight edge as a community/movement?
(I'm going to take the road less traveled and assume you actually are who you say you are. I'd feel horrible if I accused Ian Mackaye of lying and found out it's really him. Haha)

Good too see that Ian Mackaye is still alive...

I live 100 miles out side of SLC in Idaho... I am a peaceful straight edger that has integrity in my beliefs... everyone thinks every straight edge kid is a hardliner or militant... especially cause SLC Is soo close

That's probly not Mackaye himself there, but the person makes a good point... Did they try to get him in the documentary? Did they even try to interview edge bands at all?
And seriously, these sweeping generalizations using labels need to stop. Yes, the kids who did some of the SLC stuff were hardline vegan kids... however that doesn't mean that all vegan edge kids are violent nor does it mean that they are all not violent. Same goes for all the offshoots of edge that this documentary seems to be covering, how about a little investigative journalism instead of just applying stereotypes to each section of the community and completely defining them through those stereotypes?

My point is that Vegan Straight Edge isn't some new offshoot that's dedicating itself to living peacefully to give Straight Edge a better name; it existed before (not only before, but alongside kids like the ones shown, only then the peaceful kids weren't getting any airtime) and was militant and violent and done in the name of Vegan Straight Edge. They obviously had just talked about it, yet they have the narrator introduce these kids with "It's called Vegan Straight Edge", like it's a new offshoot instead of just the different extreme.

To Patrick's comment, I do know they interviewed bands at the Edge Day show in Massachusetts.

That's something at least.

there is another SXE documentary coming out this year - it was shot last year and they did a lot of interviews with different straight edgers from all across the states, but also with ian mackaye, ray cappo, karl buechner and others. seemed pretty interesting. they also have a blog about the shooting: http://edge.compassionmedia.org
oh yeah and apparently they also filmed the edge day show.

Oh goddamnit! I already get shit on for being vegan straight-edge, but now I can't wait for the ammount of shit I get now after this for being a "dumpster diving hippie anarchist squatter" When I was in highschool kids much much much smaller then me would come make fun of me and like try to intimidate me because they always said "straight-edge kids don't fight! haha" It's shit like this where they get that from. I hope the whole thing doesn't come off as either your hippie dumpster diver or a militant murder machine. Dude, how is it so fucking hard to accuratly portray us in the media. I had much hope about this documentary, but I don't know after seeing those 2 clips. Where do they find these people seriously? I mean no offense and I haven't seen the whole story about those guys, but for the most part dumpster-divers eat anything from meat to dairy to eggs and alot are called "freegans", so if this is the case they have no right being associated with vegans.

Why do i see this just pissin alot of kids off!

Ian:
If you're real, they probably didn't ask you to be part of this because you acted like such a fruit in American Hardcore...
Jesse: No one who is Straight Edge calls themselves Straight Edgers...
Phil: I know these kids personally and their not Freegans.
Slam: True. I get confused with the whole "vegan straight edge" thing anyway. Considering that veganism has absolutely nothing to do with straight edge.

thurston moore (the narrator, of sonic youth fame) is straight edge? anyone have any credible info on that?
Posted by rob | April 9, 2008 8:41 PM
to xmikex - I went to the site you said had an upcoming doc on straight edge - but it looks like a film done by straight edgers. Isn't that a little conflict of interest? Its not really a documentary then - just a film. Might be a good one, but will be completely one-sided. Mormans make a lot of documentaries about their religion...

I lived in salt lake county and not every one is vegan straight edge or militant its a fw tuff guy who think they need to prove a point. I just finished watching the documentary and they did a good job showing both sides and proving were not a bunch of hooligans that run amuk but a family and stand by one another we may not be blood or know eachother but we are bound through straight edge

Why do i see this just pissin alot of kids off!
cause it, like everything else, focused on the bad instead of the good...
should have just left it alone if they weren't going to cover it correctly.

dumpster diving is stupid

I am straight edge, andn ot vegan. I have never thrown a fist.

this documentary was so focused on the militant side of sxe. it is such a shame because there are thousands of amazing sxe kids that are active in the community, environmentally conscious, and pacifists. i am not sxe, but i have many good friends who are. we accept each other's lifestyles. the thought of it being considered a gang is ridiculous, and from where i'm from it is deffinitely not the case (not even by law enforcement). i'm saddened by the lack of balanced reporting on the part of nat geo; as a long time member i expected more.
peace.

i think the whole idea with the FSU is a petty good one just because people shouldt be into drugs im sraight edge but not vegan and i could totally do FSU if there was a FSU gang where im at and i think its better to give drug money to charity so a helpless child has a place to sleep or eat
Posted by Chase | April 12, 2008 12:09 PM
I love how all you dudes consider your self "straight edgers". Im guessing your a bunch of high school kids that have been straight edge for maybe 2 months or so

OKAY... Is it weird that our everyday lives are so intriguing to some? Intriguing enough to make a documentary about... I think it is, personally.
