Six Degrees - Our World Plus 1°C
February 1, 2008What would happen if the earth's temperature increased by 1°C (1.8°F)? There is no clear way to predict what would occur, but scientific research and climate models indicate some serious changes to out climate. Earth's climate has increased less than a degree of warming, but as researcher/author Mark Lynas outlines in his book "Six Degrees", there are some potentially drastic effects in store for earth's climate.

Our World Plus 1°C
| ° | Severe droughts in the western United States could cause shortages in global grain and meat markets. |
| ° | Arid regions of the western United States could revert to desert-like environments. |
| ° | New deserts could emerge in the western half of the United States, from Texas all the way up to the Canadian border. |
| ° | The Arctic could be ice free for half the year, opening the legendary Northwest Passage for ships. |
| ° | Rising tides could submerge thousands of homes around the Bay of Bengal. |
| ° | An increase of 1 degree Celsius may cause hurricanes to begin hitting the South Atlantic. |
| ° | An increase of 1 degree Celsius may inspire an agricultural makeover in England, as crops previously unable to survive in the United Kingdom begin to thrive. The United Kingdom now has more than 400 vineyards, growing grapes that have typically been grown in France. |

Has this program created enough FEAR to satisfy your desires? Will you get more funding? This presentation is so skewed toward disaster that it has lost any sense of credibility. I'm all for reducing negative influences on our environment, but give me a break. These worst case scenarios may be accurate on one level, but they will likely NEVER happen again, and often, EX: Hurricane Katrina, have NOTHING to do with global warming. In the most recent hurricane season, despite horrid projections, no major hurricane disaster occured in the USA. The earth's temperature has fluctuated for millineum, it ALWAYS recovers. Your FEAR mongering is pathetic. You count on viewers who are uninformed and lacking enough objectivity to see the truth. "If current trends continue" is such a weak premise. There are no consistent trends on Earth. Climate fluctuation is NORMAL. Again, let's all stop doing tings that negatively effect or world, but let's not get caught up in the FEAR created by your programing.

Andy, your retarded. The earth goes through changes, but not this quickly. I'm sure the world would gradually get hotter, and then there'd be another ice age, and then again and again. but humans are the ones that are making the earth increase faster than the earth can take. if you watched this program you'd understand. like with the oceans, like theres too much co2 for the animals to absorb, and then they die. people use more energy than they need. putting more co2 into our earth. like after the dinosaurs were here, the co2 was buried underneath the ground. but about 100 years ago, when people found it again, i guess you could say its been abused. and i have to say its mostly america's fault, because they use the most fuel and electricity than any other country. all these events could actually occur. i think it was smart of them to use the scare tactic.. we've known about global warming for years, but still not many people take action. we need not just america to, we need the whole fricken world to unite. i mean im 14 years old (dont hold it against me) and i dont want me or my future kids to live through hell based on how people live today. people need to be scared.. global warming IS scary. its not right to fluff it all up. hopefully that progam made some people think about how they use energy and stuff.. because it sure made me.
when i was about to watch this, i thought 1-6 degrees would not change much. but dang.. i certainly dont want any hurricanes to hit the south atlantic more either, because a lot of my family lives in Cameroon in Africa.. and they dont deserve to have that. i say, to give the countries who mess things up for everyone else hell. because africa barely even uses a lot of energy.

Wow, wow, wow, both of you Andy and Dee. I can’t believe you are 14, Dee, and making comments like this. Good for you! My point is, not many people know about the Earth’s warming. Poor people who don’t have cable, don’t watch NG, I don’t thing the whole “warming issue" and green days are well known to all people. Not everybody read new, or watch cable programs. Rich people with money do, but they are busy, and many don’t care. Earth has so many people, and we, the people, we consume so much crap!!!!!! Show may be scaring people, but even people who think that they know about global warming, we don’t really know! We definitely don’t know the science; we do not know physics, and chemistry and math, to put all that together. The shows was excellent, and guess what, Earth will fix itself alone, for the cost of humans! Humans may disappear because of the damage we create, but above all, the government fight for oil, the government and the richest are rich because of it, and they will not allow this “ protect the Earth” to succeed! Let’s get government to change and put some serious rules, let’s cut their money, and we will have Green Earth in a year.....And why are new developments and new houses not built to create more energy efficiency….

The fact that global warming is a problem that should be over looked by every one. If it keeps going on then the world for our children and our childrens children will be so much more diffrent. I personaly dont want this to happen, i want them to live in a healthy envorment. Thank you for your concerns and thank you for making a tv show!!!

well i'm an 8th grader and i have been very worried about the global warming issues...i saw the six degrees show last night and i thought that is was amazing and helped me understand at large the pursuing consequences...and i also want to be able to live in this world for a while, and the way we've been treating our world is not going to make that happen so easily. so thanks for doing the program, i really liked it and i've been thinking about that a lot more since i first heard of it in 5th grade, my friends and i occasionally talk about the issues that the news and political people sometimes tend to forget. it's like the world isn't as important as the campaign and the war in iraq and terrorist plots.

when i was watching this vid. i was amazed at how the world could change so violently...i thought that it would never happen. at least not so quickly. now i may not be as smart as dee or andy, but i do have some knowledge. i think that when the earth is going through changes, it could cause some really big impacts. but this is happening during the hurricane seasons, i saw "An Inconvenient Truth" by Al Gore, i thought that what he explained about the hurricane katrina increase in size, i thought is was just because it went over warm waters again, but i guess it had more to do with the fact that the oceans are getting warmer at a faster rate than we would like. then with the carbon dioxide emissions going at a rate that is not healthy, they were somewhat relative to average in the past, but now it's sky rocketing!!!in the next fifty years, he thinks that they will be over 5,ooo! such bad luck for our children eh? well that would be us, the 13-18 year olds, we're the ones who have to live with what our parents have done to this world, WE are the cause of this climatic change. but yeah...it is a big deal for all of us and we need to get a move on with what we're going to do! not just sit around with the wildfire warnings and no explanation as to why that could be happening!!!

I am 51 and have not yet seen the show. I will tell you that when i was in my teens, way back in the early seventies, we were concerned about where our planet was headed. one of the major things to take in to consideration is how many people there are on our little rock and that we live in a closed system. all the air and water that we have now is all the air and water we will ever have. it gets recycled. as we cut down our forests and jungles, cover what we can under cement and asphalt, we take a piece of the recycling machinary out of the system. a good book to read is "catastrophy" it is about a volcano that erupted way back around 540 and caused a lot of changes on our planet. the one thing that didn't change was the amount of babis being born every year. and that in a nutshell is the problem. TOO MANY PEOPLE!

global warming is really serious, i mean think about it. if one species, like the seal in antarctica, dies, think about it and the chain reaction. this sounds wierd, but i would like my kids to see other animals like those!

The documentary is for informational purposes and not to scare anybody who sees it. Let us face it, we are all in danger, the Earth and everything in it which means including us the human race. Blaming others is not the solution, and perceiving the dissipation of this information as to create fear is also not the way to go in resolving this problem. Each of us contributed to the problem, so let us be the responsible person that we are and own the blame. I am a parent and I am worried of what is instore for my children in the future if this problem continue to exist. Blaming and being scared will not help us and the world, but making a headstart to be contributors to the solution is. Start at home by educating everyone in the family of the dangers of Global Warming. Enjoy the nature now than later and help in the preservation of the nature around you. Recycle, recycle, recycle. Be proactive and getting involve will be a big help.

ok so,i am a scientific believer to a certain extent but i also have faith in God.im not sure why no one is connecting global warming to passages said in the bible about the final days.its said in the bible that there will be natural disasters, children will be disobidient to their parents, there will be men sleeping with men.dont these scientists read their bible?!.i do however believe that God isnt going to destroy the planet but he will get close to doing it just to prove to humanity what he is capable of.

The fact is that our planet is changing more rapidly than it has in the past.
I don't believe that inducing fear is the motive of this book/program, but rather increasing awareness.
We have already changed the global climate. 6 degrees simply outlines projections for the future, should we choose to continue on our current path.
There are a number of simple things that each of us could easily do to help curb the emission of greenhouse gasses if we would only take the time.

I'm Ashley Baskinger, I'm a 9th grade high school student and I'm featuring a whole web design project/web site on Global Warming. It fastinates me how much we do in our daily lives that effect our feature outcome, and how much we can change that can reduce it. Global warming is real and it's happening, help stop it before its to late.

what will happen if global warming does come. what if the temperature increases by 6 degrees!
Posted by stephanie | March 14, 2008 3:35 PM
Well, if global warming has nothing to do with extreme climate changes, can anybody explain why here (Colombia) is still raining since september? or the extreme temperatures in Chile? there is no water, if the people in the first world have more environmental thougths and behaviour, less energy and resources used in futile entertainment, less cars per family, less food thrown into the garbage can, there will be more resources for everyone, and a safer cleaner environmebt, but, of course you`ll never do that, you want to live like paris hilton and eatm consume all the food, water and energy you want, without any care about what happens to those poor hungry people that you see in the tv screen.

I know that some of you have said that global warming is more important than the war on terror...So how many planes were hijaked by CO2 emissions? How many clouds of smog set off IED's in the middle east? Sure global warming is an important issue but it seems to me that the war on terror is a more immediate threat. O and by the way...Al Gore always points to his graphs saying that you can clearly see that when CO2 rises the temparature rises. Why do we assume that the CO2 causes the temp to go up? Why didnt anyone think that the rise in temp causes increased CO2 levels? I just thought that was kind of intresting.
