DogTown - Meet Some of the Stars
January 2, 2008With the series premiere of DogTown almost upon us, here is what Jeff Popwich, who works at Dogtown, thought of a couple of dogs that you will be able to meet in the series.
Jeff Popowich - Best Friends/DogTown
Bruno:
Bruno came to Best Friends an older, tired dog. All he seemed to need was a meal, some companionship and a nice comfortable bed to snooze on. How can you not instantly feel compassion for a kid like that? When I first met !
Bruno I thought that he would be around for at least a couple years. He didn't seem to be that bad off. It just goes to show you how stoic dogs can be.
| "And there is nothing more rewarding than watching a dog come in shy and scared and seeing them transform into a happy, trusting dog." |
I hope that he knows that the people at Best Friends cared for him and wanted to make him as comfortable and happy as possible. I am very grateful to Dr Mike and Elissa for taking him home in the end. In my mind, being in a home is one of the highest priorities for dogs that have a limited time with us. I miss Bruno, but I feel that even though we didn't get much time with him, we at least affected his life in a positive way.
Zoeyann: Zoeyann is a great dog. She is friendly with everyone she meets. When she came in, I was very optimistic that her life would improve very quickly. Coming in with an allergy diagnosis simplified things for us. It didn't take long for her to start showing signs of improvement.
I remember the day we went over to visit her at the Garden. It was so nice to see her interact with her run mates and be able to just be a happy dog. It was no surprise when she got adopted, who wouldn't want a playful dog like her. Her medical condition is one that seems to be easily managed, which means she should be able to live a long, healthy life like she deserves.
I remember him being almost completely hairless when he came in. I also remember that he is a great dog.
Best Friends/Dogtown is like no other place on earth. When I first started working here, I actually felt guilty that I was getting paid to play with dogs. At the same time, it is a very rewarding and challenging job. Patience is one of the most important traits a person can have when working with animals. And there is nothing more rewarding than watching a dog come in shy and scared and seeing them transform into a happy, trusting dog. We have a huge responsibility to the animals we take care of and also to the donors that make it all possible.
Just like with any other job, there are ups and downs, good times and bad times. But I can't think of any other place I would rather be than working at Best Friends.
This series is going to put Best Friends out there even more. I feel that this is a great opportunity to showcase what Best Friends is all about. We do great things here every day and that should be shared with everyone that tunes in. We don't claim to know everything about taking care of animals, but we do know a few things about it. It will all be worth it if we educate just even one person that animals are not disposable, and that they all deserve to be in homes.
Remember, the series premieres this Friday at 9p et/pt. For another look at what you can expect you can go to ngcdogtown.com or go to Best Friends' DogTown area by clicking here.

Hey Jeff, I adopted Maddie from your rescue at a puppy mill in Virginia. It's so great to finally out a face with a voice. As always, I commend you for your work and dedication. Stay strong.

I've been supporting Best Friends for years and am soooo happy to see them get national exposure thru this program. They do amazing work and hopefully more people will support them so they can keep doing what they do.
Congratulations. The first show was wonderfully sad and happy. Let's all work to end puppy mills and pet stores!!!

Hey Jeff-
Nice job! Next time you will have to autograph my book! I now have a puppy mill dog, a Doxie named Jack. Have had him since April and still have to chase him down to pick him up. Any ideas?

Hi, I have just watched the first program and it was truely inspiring. My journey through life has always brought me to dogs. I love them deeply. I have a 9 year old Fila and 2 English Mastiffs. In the last few years I have been wanting to do something to help them. How would I go about starting a place like Dogtown here in Illinois? Can anyone HELP!!

I watched Dog Town for only half the show and had to turn it off. I admirer what they are doing for the animals, but the methods used were needing a bit of Dog Whisperer's knowledge.Sorry, I guess I've been watching Mr. Milan too long. Good luck with the show.

Hi; I just wanted to say that I just saw Dogtown and cried at the hurting dogs and cried again at the end when some were adopted out or change. What can we do to stop puppymills. How can we wake up people to understand that all animals are important and need to be treated with love like we do? They are not just dump animals. I can't get the show on my tv but I do hope to see it again. Thanks for all you are doing.

To the person who mentions Mr. Millan, kindness is always greater than force. He works from old fashioned methods that require dominance. He does not work with animals who are sick and have had no human contact. So lets not make comparisons.

It's heartbreaking about Bruno.

I was so heartbroken of watching about the puppy mill, this has open my eyes and to cruelty against these noble animals...all that I can do in my country, I will start doing it to stop things like these...congragulations on your great spirit and strenght

Wow-all dog owners and just plain animal lovers are blown away by what you all do for these poor creatures. Thanks from the bottom of our hearts.

Congratulations on your national exposure. I have been telling people for years about Best Friends and am one of the lucky people who has had the opportunity to volunteer my time caring for the animals at Best Friends along with my daughter and my sister. I have watched Best Friends from the early years to the great success that it enjoys today. Kudos to Mike, Francis, Faith, Ann, and to the real Dog Whisperer, Tyson.

i think your site is absolutely wonderful , which was found in national geographic email newsletter . here where i live , i & dog-owners are having a terribly upsetting time because of new govt disastrous evil proposals to change dog laws , & it is becoming almost worse than communist china or zimbabwe here . all day long , for a long time , one has to do petitions , about the dogs or the hunting or the animal sacrifice or the brutality etc ; & we are not winning many of the petitions , & the emotional stress is enormous. as well , govt or unseen psycho-voyeurs are instigating/provoking dog-fights & very bad bites , & out trainers are not good enough - they are into blood-sport & hurt the dogs . we have only one or two people trained in USA St francis Inst , San Francisco , & things like that .
Global warming has produced epidemic of deadly snakes , one tries to have homeopathic antidotes, but some types are not available.
I wish there were not always quarantine restrictions overseas , then one could travel more with dogs . How many countries do not require this ? Where are the best pet-sitters ? in south africa, not quite so good yet .
Anyway , have really enjoyed your website .recently we saw american animal rights films in cape town .
best wishes

I love the Dogtown show! I have two dogs I adopted from Best Friends while volunteering a few years ago. I am so thrilled that you are finally getting national exposure. I hope the media attention helps find loving homes for all these wonderful animals who deserve a happy ending to their stories. Thank you NG for showcasing this amazing and inspiring group of people.

I was happy yo see that he was given love and comapssion towards his last days..It was very sad..Thanks for helping these beautiful animals. We have a rescue dog who was abused. He is 14 now and getting on in yeras. But Rusty still has a lot of spunk. Thanks again for helping the animlas.

Hi Jeff,
I am captivated with your approach, respect and efforts with the dogs of Best friends. No words need to be spoken as one can see the deep understanding in your eyes. It grabs my heart.
The story of Bruno brought a mix of sad yet happy tears. He was given a chance to march along with pride and love.
Thank you for all of your efforts.

I just watched Dog Town tonight for the first time, and had to write to you. I was just in tears through the whole show. Tears of joy at the progress and positive change I saw in the animals once they were in your care; and tears of grief for those who didn't thrive; like Bruno, and for those who never knew Dog Town's kindness; like the unknown dog at the dump. You folks are the true angels. I am a dog person and treasure my rescued pets. I just wanted to Thank You, on behalf of all the those sweet souls that have found peace and love at your gates. God has blessed them with Dog Town!

Just watched the show for the first time tonight. Your efforts are awesome - I wish there wasn't a need for a place like yours, but until we, as humans, grow up and start taking responsiblity for ourselves and our actions, it's great to know there are people like you around. Jeff, thanks alot for making me bawl my eyes out!! You could see the love and compassion in your eyes. Kudos. I will definitely be calling in to sponsor a pet or two. P.S. my Fila "kids" loved the show too! They are both rescued dogs too.

It warms my heart to know that a place like Dogtown and the people that give it life exist. When I grow up (I'm 60) I want to live, work, get lovens, and retire there. Room and board and a couple of bucks a week for personal items and a wet face from all the kisses is all I'll need. As for the negetive comment about Cesar, shame on you! He would be the first to say their is more than one way to get the job done in a positive way.

I cannot stop crying for Bruno. I don't know if it's because he had to be put down after his tough life or because of the respect that the wonderful people at Dogtown gave him at the time of his death. I'm sure if he died anywhere else, he would have been kept in a cooler and then destroyed. They gave him a ceremony and the dignity he deserved. The wind chimes and Rainbow Bridge story have me crying right now. I hope he is happy wherever he is.

I visited and fell in love with Best Friends Animal Society beginning in 1994. I have contributed money and also volunteered over the years.Best Friends has deserved much more national attention and TV representation for all the GREAT & ONGOING LOVING WORK THEY DO!
The DOGTOWN series is fabulous and I have emailed a lot of friends to watch it.I have told everyone I know and encountered over the years, about the unselfish & dedicated work that Best Friends is all about on behalf of the animals.I am hoping your series brings in more volunteers and contributions so more animals can be helped.
It's interesting to watch the Dog Whisperer's show, before Dogtown, with his sometimes unpleasant interactions and handling of his dogs. Then watch the Dogtown series with their very loving, gentle, animal-friendly ways with these scared creatures!
Please do more shows on Best Friends and maybe have their "Feathered Friends" department featured. So many great birds are bought and then "discarded" to shelters or passed around to other ill-informed,well-meaning people. Society has done a great injustice to all the "companion" parrots and it would be an education to expose it-along with how they are poached, stolen and brought here from other countries.
Keep up the great work Best Friends and NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC!!

I'm a BIG believer in working with rescued/abused/neglected animals. I have adopted 2 rescued dogs to date. I support the ASPCA - "We are their voice".
I also volunteer at adoption events whenever possible. (FYI-I'm 47...)
I could not wait for this show to premier.
Unfortunately, I am in the middle of recovering from a broken ankle. However, as soon as I can, I intend to drive out to the sanctuary & do whatever is necessary.
The 2nd episode with Bruno broke my heart. I know he's in a better place, of course, which did give me some comfort. I am currently watching the 2nd broadcast of that episode.
I'm hoping to purchase the series because there people that I know who are not only qualified to be there, but who have the 'gifts' of being an asset to the site.
Thank you for developing this series; everyone involved is blessed.
All the best - Melody, Blackjack & BB.

Hello
Today for the first time I watched Dogtown.I was blown away and very emotional. You guys are Heaven sent from the Lord.
You are gifted.I thank God for people like you guys who make a differences in the lives of many dogs and cats.I live in Florida by a lake and I have some ducks and goose whom I take care of with feedings and injuries.I also have a dog name Eve whom I adopted 8 years ago.Last year I found a Pitbull by the lake who was swimming and playing with the children from the community. The dog didn't have a collar and no one claim it so I decided to keep him.I named him Chance and yes I had him fixed and he has all his shots.I love animals and I hope, pray and wish to win the lottery so I can make a differences with all animal kind and trust me I would donate to Dogtown so hope I win the lottery lol.God Bless you all and the animals.Thank you for all you do for the animals. You all have a stairway to Heaven. You all touched me.

I just saw the episode with Bruno, you people are wonderful. You mentioned a problem on the reservervation with red mange. We have a corgi-mix resuce that my wife saved. She had mange and almost no hair. After 2 yrs. of ivermectin and almost no results,I started to research.I found atreatment.2 cups 3% peroxide,2 cups warm water,3heaping tbs.of boxax.Pour it on slowly, let it dry.Once a week.We saw results in about 3weeks and now she has her hair back.We added some fish oil to her food and now she is shiny and happy.

I watched this show for the first time today and I was blown away. I think it's amazing that there are still good people out there who care for animals as well as you do. I truly think you guys are amazing people and thank you for the love and support you give to animals in need. I am hoping that since the show airs, that people will think twice before neglecting or hurting their animals. I just want to say thanks again for caring about the welfare of less fortunate animals!!!!

We adopted a cat from Best Friends and were just in awe at how careful they are with their adoptions. After being associated with another rescue group, Best Friends ROCKS!!! We're watching Dog Town to support Best Friends and all they do but we're really waiting for...CAT TOWN !!!!!

I watched the show about Dog Town recently inbetween two segments of The Dog Whisperer, (which I love - he does great work too!) and I was SO INSPIRED by the work that you great people do for these animals that I wondered how we could create Dog Towns, Cat Towns and Horse Towns everywhere across this great country! (People everywhere do try to help in their own organizations, Dog Town is just truly unique.) We desperately and deeply need to heal this atrocity in our society - the throwing away of these precious creatures MUST STOP. I sincerely try each day to believe that we humans are smarter than this. There is a solution and it begins with each one of us. I own two rescued horses and a beautiful Bull Mastiff and they are the light of my life! The piece on Bruno broke my heart and has inspired me to add windchimes at my pond, the resting place of my beautiful 2 year old English Springer Spaniel, (purebred) who died over a year ago from genetic Epilepsy. His breeder (a purebred puppy mill, I'm convinced) with the power to STOP breeding and selling sick dogs, is completely ignorant and greedy. I can prove my puppy was genetically sick, but very few want to listen. I am amazed that Dog Town spares no expense to heal abandon animals - how is it that this is possible? Does anyone know? (I'm curious.) You're either part of the problem or part of the solution (the way your team goes to the dumps to search for abandon animals - AMAZING!) THANK YOU Dog Town and may you be blessed a million times!! You all truly do have a stairway to Heaven.

Well, I watched my second episode of Dogtown and cried, of course. It reaffirms my desire to help these warm hearted, unconditional loving creatures. I agree with Kelley, why cant there be dogtowns in every state? Think about the thousands of helpless pets that would experience love and peace, just as Dogtown's rescued pets, each and every day. There is a great need for this service throughout this country. Count me in if I can help get on started in PA.
Thank you Dogtown caretakers.

Having savored every inspiring moment (whether happy or sad, all were inspiring) of this too-short series, and taking the time to reflect, I keep coming back to the one moment that meant the most to me. It was this: Jeff, with a twinkle in his eye and love emanating from every pore saying, "Of course, I've never met a dog who's not adoptable." Neither have I, Jeff . . . neither have I.
Having visited and volunteered at the sanctuary several times, I honestly wondered if any tv show could capture the magic of what goes on there every day. Bravo to NG for "getting it" completely and for crystalizing the experience for those who have been there and, more importantly, for those who didn't know until now that such a place existed.

I watched your show and got upset when Bruno the old chow got put to sleep, i was glad becasue i didn't want to see him suffer. What you guys do for all the animals was very touching. Just knowing that all the animals have someone to count on when their owners don't care.

Just watched the show for the second time, and your name was the only one I remembered. I love what you guys are doing for all the animals in your Sanctuary. I wish I lived closer, I'd volunteer to help out, I have always had animals, had many farm animals as well, and still to this day, can't understand, people mistreating these other sparks of light that God has given us to look after. I would love to come and visit your place.
Keep up the good work Guys and Gals.
