Thats a Bad Bite: Dr. Brady Barrs Most Dangerous Encounter
October 11, 2007Dr. Brady Barr returns to Nat Geo to tell the tale of his most Dangerous Encounter yet. While filming in Indonesia he tracked down a cave-dwelling python. Below he describes what happened when he crawled in to the cave.
It was day three for our team in a snake cave on an island in Indonesia. On the previous two days we had seen many pythons, but all small, so we weren't expecting to see anything unexpected on day three. We were only going in to get some pick-up shots and move to the next filming location.
The cave was literally a chamber of horrors, probably the worst place I have worked in the 10 years I have been at Geographic. The cave was filled with the usual customers (scorpions, roaches, maggots, spiders, millions of bats, lizards and snakes), but it was the unbelievable amount of bat guano that made it unbearable. There were places where you had to wade through chest-deep liquefied bat guano. The stuff was like quicksand, almost sucking you down and making progress very slow and cautious. This bat guano soup along with low oxygen levels eventually prevented our expedition from going deeper into the cave.
On day three, about 200 feet (60 meters) into the cave, walking along the right-side wall where the fecal soup was the shallowest, I spied a large python partially exposed in a crack in the left wall,.....

We just watched the progam wth Dr. Brady, and being snake lovers and have owned them for 30 + years, The way he reacted when the snake began to attack and bite him was very sensationalistic and over done. I have been biten by large snakes before, and I know it hurts but I myself have NEVER carried on like he did in the show!He screams like a girl.
Maby you should re-think your hosts in certin situations, like maby a tree farm,
Thank You

i've watched brady barr quite a few times, and cannot understand why this clown get's his own tv program. he's way too stressed, and over-dramatizes everything. He's screams a lot! he doesn't seem prepared, and lacks professionalism. his interaction with the wild life is very concerning to me, and the reticulated python showed that. so what if he caught the snake. why didn't this guy have any type first aid amenities at the site. he's in Indonisia, a third world county, and he's dealing with dangerous animals. the fact that he had to trek 2 hours for alcohol is a joke.
i kind of see this guy as more entertainment than an zooligist. he's not like other people i've seen on these shows. perhaps he should be less dramatic, and a lot more professional and respectful of the environment.

I cringe every time I see this guy on television. I second Michael K's sentiments re: Mr. Barr's interaction with the wild life that he encounters. He doesn't seem to have any finesse, nor respect for the animals when approaching or handling them. He seems to have a very large ego, with only his own gains in mind. He does not come across as having any kind of true affinity for the animals or their environment. I have worked as a Naturalist, and could never imagine behaving the way I have seen him on this program. It's disappointing to see that National Geographic has given this person his own show. You should have a host that shows the general public how to respect our fellow earthbound companions, not exploit them.

I think he went nto panic. Its differant when it happens on land, but he was in a cave w/ bats, scorpions, roaches, and waist deep bat guano (poop). I would freak out to. I saw this on Leno and it had more footage of him after the incident showing the cleansing of the wound etc. I want to see the aftermath. Could you add that footage?

Sorry Dale thats all the footage we have, but if you want to check out more there is an online interview with Brady on the Dangerous Encounters website that may interest you. http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/dangerous-encounters/badbite.html

I just watched this t.v. show with my father and we both laughed through the whole thing. I agree with the bongos and michael K. I understand the whole freaking out thing but he did go more than a little bit overboard on the dramatics. I believe that caution is not really a bad thing but completly freaking out over a snake that was actually not quite as "giant" as he was putting it out as was very dumb and childish. He knew or should have known what he was going into and should have been more prepared, the man with him seemed to have a better hold on things than he actually did. I have had snakes of my own since i could walk i have loved them, and of course i have been bitten by them but if you are going to handle them you have to resect them and expect to be bitten just as if you are handling an angry cat, not go into a panic attack, and he did scream like a child.
Also i found it idiotic that he returned to the same cave and waded in the guano with stitches... that was really dumb with how "worried" he was about infection.
Thank you

I so agree with what's been said here. Barr is annoying in the extreme! He's obviously full of himself and I can't stand the way he yells at everyone ALL the time. Can you say "Type A personality?!" And, oh yeah, thanks so much for pointing out a new source to the skin hunters. Those caves were probably the last safe habitat for these endangered snakes. Nice going!

In the most of his shows Brady Barr shows very little compassion for the animals he works with. I find it difficult to accept that National Geographic and for all it stand for, recruits him and alows him to treat animals in this way. This guy is definitely in for the ego trip at the expence of animal suffering. He's loud, irritating and totally insensitive. He just seems to belong way away from wildlife and National Geographic work; but rather instead I'd say doing cirus tricks at some cheap rate Russian reality road show

The heck with the critics. Watching Dr. Barr releaved my stress and strengthen my passion for the alligator and snake. I am a soldier in Afghanistan. After each mission and when all was calm, I looked to Dr. Brady Barr to take my mind elsewhere into a life beyond Afghanistan. I would like to work for/with Dr. Barr in his adventures where his science studies can answer unanswered questions.
Employ Me,
Pappy

i like to watch ol' brady get himself into a mess. he is so funny when he squeals like a 7 yr. old schoogirl and goes ballistic.

My family owes the experience of a lifetime to Dr. Brady Barr! We always hunt and release non venimous snakes and lizards in the trails around our Austin home but thanks to N.G.'s "super croc" DVD we took our adventure international and went to Coasta Rica in search of crocs, in the same areas Brady had. We found the crocs lounging along the Torcules River, and a Neotropical bird snake and poisonious dart frogs on our many hikes through the rain forest. Our son is on his way to becoming a biologist. Thank you Brady!!!!!!!

I just find him to be very obnoxious. He's way too loud and clumsy to be working with dangerous.. or any animals. Honestly I enjoy his programs until he starts to ..speak. It may sound harsh but honestly, if you were one of the animals and you had some guy shouting things 10 feet from you, would you attack? I sure as hell would.

Hello viewers
i just recently watched Brady for the first time on t.v. as an aspiring herpetologist i have to agree with the fact that he went overboard with the screaming and "type A" act.
but it is a VERY exciting thing to capture a large reptile and know that you did it on your own. i myself have caught many dangerous reptiles and am set to have my own show myself!! just wanted to get my voice out there!!
yep...Lizard Lady is the name...since i was 3yrs...and to tell you the truth i havent stopped loving it
Dr. Brady better look out for me...i am quite the gator wrangler
hope you all will see me soon!!
sincerely

National Geographic is Great! But Brady Barr is a girlie boy. Naturally he has his following. But he's just a wannabe. He will never get close to Steve Erwin, Jack Hanna, or Jeff Corwin...to name a few of his betters. National Geographic really sould consider finding someone with a better personality to do the show.
Brady Barr is just IRRITATING.

I actually can't believe how many negative comments are posted on here! I actually just met Dr. Brady Barr at an event and I thought he was amazing! He was intelligent, personable and humble.
I have so much respect for all the things he has done in the wild. I would love to see any one of you guys do the things he has done. NO ONE can say anything or could survive through as much as he has!
And if you are going to compare him to other people at least get the names right! Its Steve IRWIN not ERWIN. Also how is he a wannabe when hes done everything if not more than all those people??

My response is to Sara who says that no one could survive through as much as he has!!! Well Sara, if he didn't interfere with nature and remained as a informative by-stander, such as David Attenborough, then he would not have to get himself into trouble every time he wears his khaki shorts!
Also, he is not on his own! Look at the people that are involved in the situations Dr Brady puts them in, the funny thing is, you don't hear them screaming like a girl.
I think it's truly disgusting that he would make a snake regurgitate its food just so he can show the viewers!
First rule of nature - you do not interfere.
